ESTUDIO DE BIODIVERSIDAD EN PARCELA EJIDAL

Cafaselva currently supports a project for the Study of Biodiversity of the common use property in the canyon of the town Chavarrillo. This is achieved through the funding of Conafor, a government institution that supports the study, which helps better understand the natural resources of this property, that in total makes up 100 hectors. This study is conducted by The Institution of Ecology that, together with the property owners, work towards determining the best conservation strategies for the areas that need it the most. At the same time, support goes towards finding new ways of sustainable utilization of natural resources.

Chavarrillo, and specifically the cliffs of the canyon and Tepeapulco hill, are distinguished by the presence of a plant considered to be the most ancient of Mexico, Dion edule, more commonly known as “Tiotamal”. There is also richness present in the diversity of 42 species of orchids and 273 species of resident birds identified locally.

After finishing the study, we hope to identify the parts of these lands that will be deserving of a Payment for Environmental Service for the Conservation of Biodiversity and that with this money, the landowners can receive support.

OBSERVATORIO AGUILILLA CUARESMERA Y MIGRACION DE RAPACES EN PRIMAVERA

SWAINSON'S HAWK BIRD OBSERVATORY

The Swainson’s Hawk Bird Observatory is a 12m-high tower constructed by Aldo Contreras and Cafaselva in 2007 on top of his family home in Chavarrillo, Veracruz. It is ideally located to observe the spring migration of thousands of raptors on their way to the northern breeding grounds. Swainson’s Hawks and Turkey Vultures often pass in huge numbers, especially in the afternoon, regularly accompanied by other migrating birds of prey such as Broad-winged Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, Mississippi Kite, Osprey and Peregrine.

The large migration of raptors through Chavarrillo is due to the hill system just to the south of the town which funnels migrating birds to the east of the mountains.

The Tepeapulco hill overlooking the town is an important roosting place for many of the birds, with a record of 600,000 seen taking off one morning. Some of the birds which have roosted on the hill often pass the tower at eye-level early in the morning.

SPRING RAPTOR MIGRATION

Join us for the spring migration.

From our observation tower, watch thousands of Swainson’s Hawks and other birds migrate daily from February 24 to May 1.

TEPEAPULCO BANDING STATION

As many of the migrating raptors roost on the hill, a banding station was set up on the ridge in order to capture some of the birds and study their migration. Tours to the banding station can be arranged in order to explain how the birds are trapped and measured.
